Profile background / grid banner guide

How Do I Get a Banner on TikTok?

The short answer

  • If your account has the feature, open your profile and tap Edit profile. A background control sits on that screen — users report it as Add background or Change background. It is not in Settings.
  • If there is no such entry, the option is most likely not enabled for your account. No hidden menu turns it on, and updating the app does not guarantee you will get it.
  • If you just want a banner, three pinned posts give you one with no account feature at all — that is the part you fully control.

No account checks, no unlockers, no upload or download tools. This page cannot see or change your account.

01 What the phrase means

What Is a TikTok Banner?

The phrase covers three different things, and only one of them is a TikTok feature. Troubleshooting the wrong one is why some tutorials never seem to match what you see on your phone.

Native Profile Background

What
One wide image behind your avatar and bio.
Where
Your profile header, above the post grid.
Feature?
Yes. It depends on a TikTok account option.
DIY?
Only the image. Whether you can set one is not up to you.
Best for
Accounts that already see a background control.

Where the background option should be

Three-Post Grid Banner

What
One wide picture cut into three vertical tiles.
Where
The first row of your post grid, not the header.
Feature?
No. It uses ordinary posts and pinned posts.
DIY?
Yes. You cut the image and publish the tiles.
Best for
Anyone who wants a banner today, feature or not.

Build the three-post version

Sticker Banner

What
Stickers arranged into a decorative strip.
Where
On that post or story — never a profile header.
Feature?
No, but it depends on your app's sticker tools.
DIY?
Yes, though the current workflow is unverified here.
Best for
One-off decorative posts rather than a fixed banner.

Why stickers are a separate technique

Illustrative layout. The left panel is a schematic of a profile header, not a capture of the TikTok app. No panel here reproduces app chrome, icons or menus.

02 The reported path

How to Add Banner on TikTok Profile

Open your own profile, then the edit screen. Accounts that have the feature show a background control there; users report the labels Add background and Change background. We have not confirmed those labels against a current build, so read them as reports rather than documentation.

  1. Open your profile, then the edit screen

Tap the profile tab and then Edit profile. If your account exposes a background control, it sits on that screen — not in Settings, and not in a separate banner app.

  2. Look for a background control

Users report Add background or Change background. If neither appears, there is no hidden submenu to find: the option is simply not exposed to that account.

  3. Choose an image you own, save, reload

Pick a photo, confirm the crop, save, and pull the profile down to refresh. If the change does not stick, treat that as an upload problem rather than a missing feature.

What this page cannot do: no site — this one included — can check your account, reveal a hidden switch or turn the option on. If both labels are missing from your editor, the feature is not available to that account, and that is not a fault you can fix.

Abstract steps only. A screen-exact walkthrough needs first-hand device captures, so we do not publish invented app screens.

03 When it is not there

TikTok Banner Not Showing

Start with the cause. In most reports the background option is not enabled for that account — it is not a setting you switched off, TikTok has published no eligibility rule, and there is nothing to switch back on. The four cases below separate that from a failed upload, from an option that used to exist, and from an account that behaves differently.

You cannot find a background option
A

No background option at all

Likely cause
The feature appears not to be enabled for every account, and no official eligibility rule has been published.
What to check
Confirm your app version in the store listing, reopen Edit profile, and look once on a second device if you have one.
If it still fails
Stop looking for a hidden menu. Use the three-post method, or report it through TikTok's in-app help.

the path, step by step

B

The option disappeared

Likely cause
Users describe the control appearing and later vanishing between app versions. No cause is confirmed, and we would not guess at one.
What to check
Note the date and version when you last saw it, and whether you switched accounts or reinstalled the app since.
If it still fails
Report it in-app with those details. A modified build is not a fix worth the risk.

reports from other accounts

C

The save did not stick

Likely cause
Most reports of this kind look like an ordinary upload or crop failure, not a missing feature.
What to check
Retry once with a standard JPEG or PNG at a modest file size, then reload the profile before concluding anything.
If it still fails
Clear the app cache, try again on Wi-Fi, and check whether the same image saves as an ordinary post.

the save step explained

D

It works on another account

Likely cause
A third-party analysis of 603 Google Play reviews describes uneven access across Android accounts. That is a sample, not a rollout map.
What to check
Compare app version, device and account age between the two accounts before assuming anything about your own.
If it still fails
Nothing on your side unlocks it. The three-post banner works whatever your account gets.

account-level reports we can verify

This is a map, not a checker. The page cannot inspect your account, confirm eligibility or unlock a feature — no website can. If your symptom is not here, TikTok's troubleshooting index (external) is the official route.

If no option appears on your account at all: the three-post alternative, which needs no unlock

04 The method you control

How to Make a TikTok Banner

No feature needed. One wide image, three equal slices, three posts, pinned so the top row of your grid reads as a single picture. This is the short version — the full walkthrough, including seams and pin fixes, sits in the guide.

Pick one wide canvas

3240 × 1440 px is the community canvas for three 1080 × 1440 tiles — a convention, not an official TikTok banner spec. Keep faces and text off the two one-third lines.

Cut three equal vertical slices

No gutters, no borders. Check each tile on its own: in the grid it sits beside two unrelated posts, and anything near an edge gets visually clipped by its neighbour.

Publish right → centre → left, then pin

Community guides describe that order so the newest post lands leftmost. Grid direction and pin behaviour change between versions, so open your profile and re-pin if the picture reads backwards.

One 3240 × 1440 canvas, cut into three tiles. Original artwork; the seams are the page gaps between tiles, not marks baked into the image.

Nothing is uploaded here. This page does not split, generate or download images. Any splitter you use — including a third-party one — does that work outside this site.

Publishing order described by community guides

The order comes from a creator guide (RepostGrid), not from TikTok documentation. Verify the result in your own profile preview before you invest in a second attempt.

05 Evidence

How to Get the Banner Update on TikTok

There is no code, invite or setting that grants it, so we will not sell you one. The three labels below describe how strong the information is — not who has the feature. Dated snapshot, reviewed 4 November 2026.

Confirmed

TikTok runs general troubleshooting help and an in-app reporting route. In this review we found no official help page that documents a profile-background banner feature — so there is no official launch date, size or eligibility rule to quote.

User Reports

Creators describe Add background and Change background in profile editing. A third-party analysis of 603 Google Play reviews (Android) describes uneven availability across accounts.

Not Confirmed

A launch date, a country list, an eligibility rule, animated or GIF backgrounds, official native banner dimensions, and the idea that installing an app update is what grants it.

Evidence status at the review date — not a rollout timeline. Report counts belong to the named study; we did not collect reviews ourselves.

Searched questions

How do I get a banner on TikTok?

Open your profile, tap Edit profile, and look for a background control — reported as Add background or Change background. If it is not there, your account most likely does not have the feature yet; the four cases cover what to do instead.

What is a TikTok banner?

Three things share the name: a native profile background, a three-post grid banner, and a sticker arrangement. Only the first is a TikTok feature — the comparison above shows where each one appears.

How do I add a banner on my TikTok profile?

Profile → Edit profile → background control → pick an image → save, then reload the profile. The three steps above name which parts of that path are confirmed and which are only reported.

How do I make a TikTok banner?

Split one wide image into three equal tiles, publish them right → centre → left, then pin them so the grid reads as one picture. The make section has the canvas size and the pin check.

How do I get the banner update on TikTok?

You cannot request it. Availability appears to vary by account and no official rollout rule exists; the evidence section separates what is confirmed from what users report.

Added by the editors

What size should a TikTok banner be?

No confirmed official pixel size exists for a native profile banner. 3240 × 1440 is a community canvas for three 1080 × 1440 tiles — a different job from the native option.

Is a modified APK worth trying?

We found no verified method, and modified apps carry real account and security risk, so this site does not link to them. The three-post method needs no unlock at all.
